What To Do After a Severe Storm
Once the storm has passed, take a look around your property from the ground.
You may notice shingles in the yard, damaged gutters, fallen tree limbs or pieces of roofing material around the house. In some cases, however, there may be very little visible evidence that the roof was affected.
That doesn’t necessarily mean everything is fine.
Wind can loosen or lift roofing materials, while hail can damage the surface of shingles and roofing components without immediately causing water to enter the home.

The size and density of the hail, wind speed, direction of the storm, roofing material, roof age and roof pitch can all affect how a roof performs during a hailstorm.
Hail can damage asphalt shingles by affecting the protective granule surface or damaging the material underneath. It may also leave visible impact marks on vents, flashing, gutters and other metal components.
Finding hail impacts does not automatically mean you need a new roof.
Some roofs remain completely serviceable after a storm. Others may have isolated damage that can be repaired.

High winds can damage roofing materials even when shingles haven’t completely blown off the house.
Wind can place tremendous pressure on shingles, ridge caps, flashing and exposed roofing components.
A shingle may lift during the storm and settle back into position afterward. From the driveway it may look normal, while the adhesive seal underneath has been damaged.
That’s one reason a roof can begin leaking weeks or even months after the storm that originally caused the problem.
If you see missing shingles, roofing material in the yard or shingles that appear lifted or out of place, have the roof inspected as soon as reasonably possible.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make after severe weather is assuming the roof wasn’t damaged simply because there isn’t a leak.
A roof can sustain damage long before water reaches the interior of the home.
